Dear NCS Families,

Reading at NCS

Parents are often asking staff about what they can do to help improve their child’s reading skills.  Though students at NCS receive many hours each week of direct reading instruction from teachers,   there are many strategies that parents can adopt at home to help strengthen the process.

  1. Create a Reading Routine: Encourage daily reading by setting aside dedicated time for reading each day. Consistency helps build reading habits.

  2. Read Aloud Together: Reading with children, especially at a young age, builds vocabulary, comprehension, and a love for reading. Discuss the story to enhance understanding.

  3. Encourage Independent Reading: Offer books at an appropriate reading level that match their interests. Children are more motivated when they read about topics they enjoy.

  4. Discuss and Ask Questions: Engage children in conversations about what they read. Ask questions to improve comprehension and critical thinking.

  5. Provide a Reading-Rich Environment: Make sure books, magazines, and other reading materials are easily accessible at home.

  6. Model Reading Behavior: Children often mimic their parents, so demonstrating an interest in reading can inspire them to read more.

  7. Limit Screen Time: Reduce the amount of time spent on non-educational screen activities, replacing it with time for reading or related activities.

  8. Work with Teachers: Stay in touch with the child’s teacher to monitor progress and get advice on how to support reading development at home.

  9. Praise Effort and Progress: Celebrate milestones and encourage a positive attitude toward reading, even if improvement is gradual.

Best,

Adam Bullard

For the past 6 weeks, thirteen 3rd-7th graders have met weekly on Tuesdays for Sewing Club. With guidance from club leaders Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Poland, and Mrs. Gavelis, students have been working diligently on their self-selected projects. Below are just a few of the well-crafted fabric creations. Well done, Lions!!

1st graders enjoyed a visit to the Nobleboro Historical Museum before Thanksgiving break. While there students were lead in activities from long ago including, peeling apples, doing laundry with a wringer washer, hand drilled holes in wood, and did a little math using slates and chalk.

Fourth grade ended Trimester 1 with a bang! Celebrating the completion of their mystery novel study on "The Westing Game," students dressed up as the characters they chose when beginning the novel. Mrs. Courand is so proud of the sleuths they came to be.
