JVS MATH TEAM NEWS! Middle School Math Team members at JVS compete in the Continental Mathematics League. They compete in the Euclidean Division which requires strong reading comprehension and analytical reasoning skills. Participation offers not only the opportunity to improve problem solving skills, but the chance to compete academically with other students at the same grade level from schools all over the United States. There are typically over 100 schools competing in the Continental Mathematics League at each grade level. Competition questions may be administered to dozens of students at each participating school, so this means there could be well over 1,000 students competing at each grade level. Here at JVS we have 21 middle school students in grades 5-8 participating in the math league. There are 5 meets per year, one per month, from November through March. During a meet, each student works independently on the problem set for 30 minutes. A problem set includes 6 non-routine word problems. Both a team score and individual scores are recorded for each school for each meet. To score a perfect paper on a problem set for one meet is a real accomplishment. This year, JVS sixth grader Jonathan B has had a perfect score at every meet for the entire season – one of only thirty-six students in the nation to do so at the 6th grade level! This means Jonathan is ranked as a “National Student Leader”. In the New England Region, Jonathan is one of only three students who have perfect scores. The other students are from Massachusetts and Connecticut. The fifth meet of the season was on Thursday, March 6. The standings as of this final meet are: Grade 5 Meet 5 High Score: Naia O. (with a perfect score!) Grade 5 Highest Cumulative Score: Naia O Grade 6 Meet 5 High Score: Jonathan B (with a perfect score!) Grade 6 Highest Cumulative Score: Jonathan B (with a season perfect score!) Grade 7 Meet 5 High Score: Katherine M, Aubree B (both with perfect scores!) Grade 7 Highest Cumulative Score: Katherine M Grade 8 Meet 5 High Score: Alexis B Grade 8 Highest Cumulative Score: Lilith EB and Alexis B (tied!) Congratulations to All!

As cold and flu season roll in, it can be helpful to have some guidance on when to send a child to school or when it may be best to keep them home. Attendance Works has great resources to help parents and schools around this issue.
